Navy Life Pallat Sign

Navy Life
I made this sign (actually a few) for some friends the other day... but because our birthday dinner/ girls night out was starting literally as the sealer was drying.. i didn't get very good pictures.
still wanted to share :)

I think I may just have to make one for myself!

Pallets are plentiful around here with all the new constructiton.. I'm always on the hunt!
I started sawing away at it one night.  I broke the saw.

Enter husband with a power saw...

much better

I brushed it with a heavy duty bristle brush first to get the lose dirt off.  Next i used rough sand paper and after that, a softer sanding block.
 painted it white.
I used stencils and paint that i had already.. yay for last minute things that work out!
When it was dried, i destressed the edges with the soft sanding block.  I also roughed up the letters, making it look worn.
Finally, I hot glued the rope to the back.

i hope my friend liked them.
love my navy wife friends!
love my Navy Life too.. most of the time :)

Zumba Diaries

A while back I posted some of my random thoughts during a Zumba class..  well, that same white girl still laughs at herself (and others) as we try to shake it.

 It's fun!
 It's a great workout!
...
I just need to start having a margarita first :)  LOL

Speaking of margaritas.. yesterday I was headed into Zumba class when I saw a text for our neighborhood party for the month of May... cinco de mayo of course! A friend of mine and I try to pull our allotment together once a month (or every other) to actually chat with the neighbors we so often wave to.. it's great!  So I told her I would get my Mexican thoughts flowing and come up with some great ideas!  I didn't get her text back till after class... but yeah, I was in the wrong Spanish speaking area.  oh well! I'm not very well versed in geography.. can ya tell?

I started to figure this out when the cute instructor with the Jamaica braids said something about Africa.. and the next song kept repeating "this is Africa!"  Ok! so I'm thinking tribal.. but the song was sort of pump you up.. so I thought about yelling "futbol!"  but decided to conserve my energy (and what little dignity I had not danced away).  Just when I was getting into a "grove" (pun intended) the next song played needed maracas.. shaking like that just doesn't happen without them.

Right-Left-Right-Right.. pretty sure it was an old school move .. I can't remember the name.. but i so had that one down!  However, leading with the left and the heel is not natural at all for me.  Switching.. step-step... hummmmm.  At one point I did kick ball change and called it good.

Slowing it down at the end, I'm thinking it was Spanish rap.  There were a lot of "look like you are in da club" type moves.  You may think I failed here.. but since Snoop is my all time favorite rapper (that's for you aub!) .. i was da bomb! <clearly lying>

So... I haven't improved all that much. I still have no clue what culture this is mimicking.  But it's fun.   And I'm not the only one out of my element.  There was a middle aged woman of Asian decent who possibly had less of a clue than me.  And then there was Buddy the Cake Boss' mom and sister Mary .. with their patron Saint of Zumba necklace...they have us all covered!

Have fun this weekend!

GA on my mind

Last Friday our cable took a vacation.. don't know why, it just quit working. No cable/internet during March Madness is just wrong.  I do not follow college basketball as much as football any more.. but I love March Madness!  All the big upsets, the last second wins, the Cinderella teams... love it!! I mean who ever heard of  Florida Gulf Coast before?!

So, it was frustrating to try to keep up with the games on our phones.. we missed so much. We even found out about one upset via the Saturday paper! What?! People still Do that??  I thought the weekend paper was strictly for finding out where the big sales are... turns out they still put some other important info in there.

Between the lack of electronic entertainment for the kids on spring break (yes, i said that) and the cold rainy weather.. we were ready to get the heck out of Dodge! (Aka Jacksonville).  Matt's parents were going to be in Savannah for a few days before heading our way so we figured why not go meet them. Explore a new city? Sure!

Well, I am sure Savannah is a beautiful city.. I'm told it is, but I walked around with my head down most of the time. It was so cold and windy!!  I detest wind. With a passion. Complaining in full force.. and I'm not talking about the kids! I'm a big girl.. I will admit it..  I. Was. Whining.

Micah couldn't let me out do him I guess so he took the route of "not going to sleep in the hotel" .. we know that one well and it never gets easier.  How funny though that Matt and I packed books to read "while the kids slept off their sight seeing exhalation".... riiiight!  Man! When will we learn!?!

Oh well.. I hope to make it back up to Savannah sometime.. it is a cool historic city!
(Minus the wind and Plus some sleep.)

Spring is in the air

Spring is coming!  After getting used to the whole daylight savings time thing (worst day of the year.. Who's with me?!) I start to settle in and enjoy the extra time we have to play outside and the spring storms (I can't wait for some good ones now that we are back on the east coast!). Yep aside from the internal barometer I have in my head telling me when the weather is changing... I really love spring!

I thought tonight was a perfect night to take a family bike ride .... Perfect night maybe but not the picture perfect bike ride for sure.  Oh we had some grouchies with us.... Hopefully the early bed time they earned gets them all rested up for tomorrow... Another day closer to Spring!

The bike ride may not have been too picture perfect... But the pics I snapped before we left were kinda cute ;).

bird watching and eyelashes

I accompanied Garrett's class on a field trip today to a local nature reserve.  And while the skies were threatening all morning, it didn't dampen the science learning spirits at this place!  I was at ease when  I found out that the majority of the activities would be inside.. not so much due to the foreseeable rain, but because of the waiver I had signed stating I was aware we could see snakes!  Happy to say we actually had to stay on a concrete podium so not to disturb the wild life (phew!)  .. I no longer had to worry about what 2nd graders would think of "Garrett's mom" if she ran away.. leaving them to fend for themselves against some ginormous (ahem) snake!

  • first they mastered the art of bird watching.. or in Garrett's case.. figured out why both his binoculars and mine had :flashing things across the screen".  ... yes, son.. you have amazing long eye lashes.  so you can't be a bird watcher.  get over it.  (btw.. sad that he doesn't call them "be noculars" any more).

  •  very intense listening and learning going on here... and sipping!  He insisted on wearing his Camel Back (also supplied with sunscreen and bug spray) so he wouldn't be thirsty.  I think he was imagining more of a hike.. but none the less.. yep, he had to pee mid "What You Find on the Beach" presentation.
  •  Using the two finger touch rule... i followed closely.. with antibacterial soap!
  •  They needed to do scientific research as part of the "Natural Habitats" presentation.  They got to explore the displays and read to find the answers to the questions on the scavenger hunt paper.  It's awesome to see how excited they are to do this at this age!!
  •  Garrett and his good buddy, Brock.. had a lot of fun together!  And they are two of the sweetest boys any 2nd grade has seen :)  (slightly biased on the G aspect).
  • And while those boys may have taught me about estuaries, habitats, and turtles...  they should have realized that mom is right sometimes...  ie: eyelashes, camelbacks, and germs!!

Micah's 1st hair cut

Why was it so difficult for me to pull the trigger on getting Micah's hair cut?  With Garrett I did it probably before he even needed it .. just out of excitement for another "first".  and I guess that right there is the reason.. Micah's firsts are most likely my "last firsts".. and they are coming too fast!  and it is getting so hard!  What's a mama to do?!  Well, I used this first to practice with my new camera.. or maybe i used the camera to hide behind. Whatever the reason, he did a great job and he looks super cute!

here we go
